Lichen is not a separate ailment, but a group of fungal skin diseases. Microscopic fungi and viruses cause lesions of the epidermis; in case of allergies and metabolic disorders, a rash also appears. Small and large, brown or red spots on the skin, similar to lichen occur in patients with eczema, psoriasis. Meanwhile, the rash with shingles is completely different from the manifestations of ringworm (fungal infection). In the case of various types of deprivation, specific treatment and general measures will be needed – strengthening the immune system, fighting bad habits.
The Name “Lichen” – Is Collective
Some people are more susceptible to fungal infections, others are not infected even with close household and sexual contact with patients or carriers. Appearing spots on the skin, similar to lichen, usually alarming those who have ever encountered fungal diseases.
Many people know that ringworm pathogens are transmitted from a sick person or animal. Characteristic signs of a contagious infection are ring spots, round plaques on the head, limbs, and body. There is peeling of the skin on the affected area of skin, worried about severe or moderate itching.
Spots on the skin, similar to lichen, occur with the following diseases:
- Trichophytosis of the body and head (the cause is a fungal infection).
- Multicolored or scaly versicolor (pathogens – several types of fungi).
- Mycotic and microbial eczema (caused by fungal and bacterial infection).
- Lichen planus (causes – viral infection, allergic reactions).
- Herpes zoster (pathogen – herpes virus).
- Pink lichen (the causative agent is a virus, the causes are associated with allergies).
- Psoriasis, scab or scaly deprive (autoimmune disease).
- Microsporia or ringworm (caused by a fungal infection).
It happens that the fungus – the causative agent of trichophytia – is present and does not manifest itself; it is suppressed by the immune system. The same thing happens with shingles. This is a herpes virus infection, its causative agent is varicellososter. It causes chicken pox in childhood, persists in the nerve endings of people who have had chickenpox. Under certain conditions, the varicellosaster virus becomes active again and causes shingles. Sometimes the disease is very difficult, the temperature rises, severe pains appear in the chest.
Signs of lichen and predisposing factors
Regardless of the species of the infectious agent, manifestations of the disease may be common in different patients. For example, spots on the skin, similar to deprive, itch, accompanied by peeling. The pigmentation of the affected areas of the skin is disturbed, they become darker or lighter in color, bright pink, red or brown.
For trichophytosis scaly patches are characteristic, for microbial eczema – weeping. When shingles appear, nodules and vesicles appear, in the case of psoriasis – plaques, thickening of the skin. Specialist dermatologists and doctors of other specialties claim that under certain conditions the risk of disease increases.
Factors that increase the likelihood of infection:
- long-term medication for allergies;
- chronic diseases, sluggish current infections;
- genetic predisposition;
- depressed immunity;
- exposure to dampness, cold;
- stressful situations;
- elderly age.
“Entrance gate” for fungal, bacterial and viral infections – microcracks, abrasions, scratches on the skin. Diseases often develop after fleeting touches to the hair or skin of a sick person, his things. Infection is possible through direct contact with infected animals, particles of their wool.
Spots on the Body – Versicolor or Not?
When there are rashes in the form of spots, nodules or bubbles, it is better to contact the experts. With various infectious and non-infectious diseases appear spots on the skin like a versicolor, but do not deprive. This may be syphilis or Lyme disease. In each case, a thorough examination and specific antimicrobial therapy will be required.
Very rarely occurs in children and the elderly pink lichen. The disease mainly affects young people and middle-aged people (from 20 to 45 years). Experts noticed that the disease occurs between spring and autumn, and suggested a viral etiology. Scientists name herpes viruses and ARVI as a cause.
At the beginning of the disease, a large maternal spot of pink-red color appears. The diameter of the affected area is from 3 to 5 cm. With time, the stain becomes yellow-brown, and the pink “fringe” remains at the edges. After 7–14 days, there is the appearance of smaller “daughter” spots. They are painted in shades of pink, yellow and brown, located along the lines of the greatest stretching of the skin on the body and limbs. Itching is absent or weak.
Manifestations of pink lichen disappear in 1.5–2 months from the moment of occurrence of the first spot, regardless of the course of therapy taken by the patient.
It happens that the spots on the skin similar to the soreness of a child are symptoms of psoriasis or allergic dermatitis. If plaques or spotted rashes have a psoriatic origin, then the use of ointments for the treatment of other diseases can cause a worsening of the clinical picture. It is recommended to give the child antipruritic and sedatives to avoid scratching the spots.
It is necessary to comply with basic hygiene requirements, do not use other people’s things, shoes, towels. You can not touch unfamiliar animals, touch the four-legged pets with signs of depriving or other lesions. Parents of children who play in the yard themselves, attend kindergarten or school, it is recommended to regularly show the child to a dermatologist.
